So far so good. A little bit of jumping around with flights but we’re up north, far north. Been a bit of a hectic few days, wrapping up things in Edinburgh and leaving our Scottish home and jumping on three planes. Yesterday we flew from Edinburgh down to London then onto Helsinki. Got in late, a little tired but excited to see snow again, slept for a few hours before heading up to Ivalo the next morning.
Now we are getting serious.
The temperature steadily declined from city to city( +2’C to 0’C to -6’C to -26’C). We arrived just after midday and the sun wasn’t much above the horizon and didn’t stay long either. It just looked like a long orange sunset/sunrise brimming against the frozen blue sky. It’s really a winter wonderland, snow everywhere. Needless to say first thing we did was rug up in our winter clothes and start running around in the snow.
I love to crunch of snow under foot, then you stop and you hear nothing. We borrowed some sleds and hiked up Kaunispää. We just couldn’t stop looking around in amazement as we hiked up, obviously had to stop half way up to make some snow angels. But the best was yet to come.
“Alright, are you ready? I’ll race you down, go!”
Off we bobbed, then a second later – damn, these things can sure pick up some pace.
What bumps? Oh crap. Hold it together…yeah nah that’s not going to happen and crash. Meg just passes by and laughs, cheeky monkey.
Once we reached the bottom, “Wanna go again?” did you have to ask? with a big grin on our faces, “Hell yeah” and up we went again. A few more races, a few more crashes, a few more interesting lines and we called it quits for the day.
You can tell we don’t see much snow, all frosted up and still deciding to walk in the deep snow next to the path rather than on the path.
We really are just big kids!
