Imlil: Riad Dar Ouassagou

Yesterday we caught a taxi from Marrakech to Imlil in the Atlas Mountains. The taxi driver was arranged by the owner of the Riad we are now staying in. He came right to the door of our hostel in Marrakech (which you cannot drive to, he had to get out and walk through the winding streets) to collect us and we trotted along behind him back to the taxi. The cost of this was €40 total, which is not at all bad for an hour and a half journey through lots of difficult terrain.

We drove through some amazing countryside on the way. I loved passing all the interesting villages. When we progressed further into the mountains, each village was perched on the rocky red hillside, complete with it’s own mosque. Invariably the clusters of crumbly square buildings are painted a red dirt colour so they blend into the hillside and just look like part of the mountain jutting out.

Being a passenger in a car is always good fun. In Marrakech, especially, the road rules are so vague they are pretty much non-existent. I don’t know how it works, but there is a real fluidity between all the skooters, cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Everyone has incredibly good reaction times and are able to leap or swerve out of anothers path in just the last minute!

The Riad we are now staying in is, as usual, incredible. Again, the exterior does not boast much, but when you get inside it’s like a palace!

Today if the weather holds we will go for a bit of a trek. The only problem is, it’s very cold here! Around about -5 to 5 degrees… Brrrr!
