As sad as we were to leave Morocco, it was time to go. Isaac was pretty put out by our run-in with gastro, not to mention an infestation of bed bugs! Fest! Anyhoo, since we ended up staying in and around Marrakech the whole time, we were in for another long trip back up to Spain. This time we were lucky to get a hold of couchette train tickets meaning we could sleep the 10 hour journey away. It was great to wake up all refreshed with half the journey behind us. We then spent the next day ferrying, busing and training it up to Granada.
Fell in love with Granada’s charms instantaneously. The first thing we did was check in and go out for some beer and tapas. In most bars in Granada you get a tapa free with your beer. I think this is the only city that still holds this tradition.
Yesterday we went up to explore the Alhambra for the morning. Isaac tore his hair out the previous few days trying to buy tickets online but they were sold out and it looked as if we would have to get up very early to line up and hope to get in. By some random stroke of luck, Isaac checked online one last time the night before and discovered another 60 tickets had been released. He purchased two tickets quick-smart and we reveled in the knowledge that we wouldn’t have to be up at the crack of dawn lining up in the cold. For anyone interested in visiting the Alhambra, make sure you purchase tickets in advance before you arrive! Also, although you have the whole morning to wander around the Alhambra, you get assigned a time slot for seeing inside the palace itself, so make sure you get there on time or you miss out. The amount of detail in the original Moorish architecture is just incredible. I wish our photos could do it justice.
We stayed in Granada for an extra day and since all other rooms were booked out, we were moved up to the Attic. Sounds dodgy, but it’s a self contained apartment including it’s own private roof-top terrace. It was a very nice apartment! We were given this accommodation at close to half the price… which was nice. Sometimes we are very lucky indeed!
